Beowulf Boritt’s recent Broadway designs include Kander & Ebb’s The Scottsboro Boys for director/choreographer Susan Stroman,Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sondheim on Sondheim directed by Mr. Lapine, for whom he also designed the set for The Twenty-Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. He designed Alfred Uhry’s LoveMusik on Broadway for Harold Prince, as well as Mr. Prince’s production of Paradise Found off-West End in London. He also designed the current hit, Rock of Ages, for Kristin Hanggi on Broadway, and in London, Toronto and Australia.
He designed Lynne Taylor-Corbett's 2011 production of the Brecht/Weil Seven Deadly Sins for New York City Ballet.
Off-Broadway, Beowulf has designed over fifty productions, including Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years for director Daisy Prince, Joe DiPietro and David Bryan’s The Toxic Avenger for director John Rando, and Strindberg’s Miss Julie for director Scott Schwartz. He has designed scenery for The Roundabout Theatre Company, The Public Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, Second Stage, The Vineyard Theatre, Manhattan Class Company, Keen Company, The Pearl Theatre, and The New Group.
He has designed for The Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, The Old Globe in San Diego, Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut, the Berkshire Theatre Festival and Barrington Stage Company in Massachussets, The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, The Huntington Theatre Company and The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in Boston, The Alley Theatre in Houston, The Dallas Theatre Center, The Delaware Theatre Company and many others.
He has twice designed the scenery for The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
Beowulf has been honored with an Audelco award, a Barrymore award, three Drama Desk nominations, two Lucille Lortel nominations and four Henry Hewes nominations for his designs. In 2007, he was honored with an OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence in Set Design.
